Privacy

What the public site collects, and what it does with it.

Newsletter

The newsletter form asks for an email address. Until you confirm, emDash holds that address so the signup can be finished. After you confirm, that temporary record is deleted. The confirmed address is stored in emDash in confirmed_subscribers and added to the emDash Now audience at Emailit, which sends the newsletter. Unsubscribing updates confirmed_subscribers and removes the address from that audience. An unsubscribe that arrives from Emailit syncs back into the emDash record.

Browser storage

This browser stores three flags for the newsletter prompt. They are not the email address. localStorage holds edn:nl-subscribed after you confirm, and edn:nl-dismissed when you close the prompt. sessionStorage holds edn:nl-engaged for the rest of that visit after you focus or submit a newsletter form. The flags only decide whether to show the prompt again.

Forms

The contact, write-for-us, and advertise forms store the fields you submit in emDash. A copy of each submission is emailed to hello@emdashnow.com.

Cloudflare Turnstile

The newsletter form and those three forms use Cloudflare Turnstile to check that a person sent the request. Turnstile loads from challenges.cloudflare.com.

Cloudflare describes what Turnstile processes in its Turnstile privacy policy.

Theme

Choosing light or dark sets a cookie named theme to light or dark. The cookie lasts one year, uses path /, and SameSite=Lax. It is only used to open the site in that theme on the next visit.

Cloudflare Web Analytics

This site uses Cloudflare Web Analytics to count page views and measure how fast pages load. Cloudflare adds a small script from static.cloudflareinsights.com to each page, and the script reports timing data back to this site at /cdn-cgi/rum. Cloudflare records the country, the page, the referring site, and the browser, operating system and device type, and does not track individual visitors across sites. The script sets no cookies and writes nothing to browser storage. Details are in Cloudflare's Web Analytics documentation.
